How does GeneE work?

For the genes in your query, GeneE retrieves all known synonyms from our gene dictionary and adds them to your query. Potentially ambiguous synonyms are combined with keywords found in other synonyms.

To use GeneE, follow these 3 steps to get the result.
1. Choose which search engine you want to search.
2. Input a gene string, GeneE will try to find related Gene name, and return back a selection list. Then you can choose the one you want to search. You can input several gene strings at one time.
3. Click the "GeneE Search" button. GeneE generate the search url, and show the search result in browser.

If you want to change the generated query before GeneE search, you can go to advance search, and modify the generated query before click the GeneE search button.

Why does the list of suggestions contain genes with names totally different from my input?

GeneE shows the preferred name of the genes. The name you entered is one of the synonyms of the gene, but not the preferred name.

How did you construct the dictionary behind GeneE?

We combined data from Entrez-Gene, UniProt, and HGNC for H. sapiens, M. musculus, R. norvegicus, E. coli, S. cerevisiae, D. melanogaster, D. rerio, C. elegans, and G. gallus. Proteins were mapped to their genes based on cross-references. We extensively filtered the dictionary as well. Details are described in our paper.

Can I use GeneE's query expansion in my search application?

Yes, the web service API is described here .

Why does GeneE not respond to arrow keys?

This is a known issues from the framework we used for developing the automplete component, please use the mouse to select the gene from the suggestion list.
